After being out of power in Delhi for 27 years, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a big victory in the 2025 assembly elections. They won 48 out of 70 seats, ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) decade-long rule. AAP only managed to get 22 seats, while Congress failed to win any seats at all.

The BJP victory means they will have a new chief minister for Delhi, but the party’s central leadership will decide who it will be. The last BJP chief minister was in office almost 26 years ago. From 1993 to 1998, three different leaders served as chief ministers.

Madan Lal Khurana (1993-1996)
Madan Lal Khurana was the first BJP chief minister of Delhi. He held the position for about two years after the assembly was restored. He couldn’t finish his term because of involvement in a scandal.

Sahib Singh Verma (1996-1998)
After Khurana, Sahib Singh Verma took over but faced many challenges, including high onion prices and water shortages. He had conflicts with Khurana and left after facing too much criticism.

Sushma Swaraj (1998)
Sushma Swaraj became the first woman chief minister of Delhi for a very short time (52 days) after Verma resigned. She tried to solve issues but couldn’t win the next elections, and the Congress party took over.

Since then, the AAP has ruled Delhi, winning elections in 2013, 2015, and 2020. However, in 2025, the BJP came back strong, partly thanks to issues with AAP’s leadership. Former CM Sahib Singh Verma’s son, Parvesh, defeated Arvind Kejriwal by over 4,000 votes.
