The niece of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has asked the Supreme Court to help get back her aunt’s properties. These assets were taken by authorities in a big case about suspicious wealth.
J Deepa believes that because the court decided in 2017 that Jayalalithaa should not be treated as a criminal, her family should have their properties returned. In her appeal, she argued that the law says no one should lose their property unless there’s a good reason and that the state cannot take someone’s belongings without following the rules.
Jayalalithaa was not guilty in the case as of 2015 when the High Court cleared her. She passed away in December 2016, and the Supreme Court confirmed her acquittal in February 2017.
The nee’s petition says that because of this past ruling, the properties should return to her family. Recently, after the Karnataka High Court’s decision, a local court ordered that these properties be given to the Tamil Nadu government. Deepa is contesting both the High Court ruling and the court’s order and is asking for a temporary pause on any action.
