Demi Moore won the Best Actress award at the Critics Choice Awards on Friday, which boosts her chances of winning an Oscar. Moore’s latest movie, “The Substance,” also won for Best Original Screenplay at the sparkling event in Los Angeles. The big movie winner of the night was “Anora,” which took home Best Picture.
Moore, 62, thanked critics for appreciating her horror movie, which shows a famous actress who uses a special serum to feel young again. This is a big comeback for Moore, who was a huge star in the ’90s and is now gaining attention for her acting.
However, the night wasn’t all good for everyone. Karla Sofia Gascon, the star of “Emilia Perez,” faced backlash after old social media posts of hers resurfaced, where she made rude comments about various groups. Because of this, Netflix removed her from their Oscar campaign, and the director of the film, Jacques Audiard, condemned her remarks.
Gascon was not at the awards show, and when her name was mentioned, the audience fell silent. During her speech, Moore, who is rising back to fame, acknowledged Gascon but others did not.
Despite the controversy, Netflix hopes that one person’s actions won’t hurt the whole team behind “Emilia Perez,” which is still nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. This year’s Oscar race is very competitive. Other winners from Friday included Adrien Brody, who won Best Actor for “The Brutalist,” and “Wicked,” which took home Best Director for Jon M. Chu.
