New Delhi – Atishi became the chief minister of Delhi last year and kept the chair of her predecessor, Arvind Kejriwal, empty in her office, as a way to show respect. Some people called her a temporary leader. However, during the recent Assembly elections, Atishi proved her strength. While many top AAP leaders, including Kejriwal, lost their seats, Atishi won the Kalkaji seat by defeating the BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri with a margin of 3,521 votes.

The campaign was tough, with lots of arguments. Bidhuri made some disrespectful comments about Atishi’s decision to change her surname, which caused a lot of controversies. At one point, Atishi got emotional during a press conference and accused him of insulting her father to gain votes. This only seemed to help her win.

Atishi was born to two teachers, Vijay Singh and Tripta Wahi, in Delhi. She studied at Springdales School before earning her degree in history from St. Stephen’s College in 2001. Later, she went to Oxford University. Her victory in Kalkaji strengthens her position in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), where she has worked hard to climb the ranks. In 2015, she became an advisor to Manish Sisodia, the education minister, and played a big role in improving the education system in Delhi.

In 2019, Atishi ran for a parliamentary seat but lost to BJP’s Gautam Gambhir. After winning the Kalkaji assembly seat, she became a cabinet minister handling several important roles. She bravely led AAP when many senior leaders, including Kejriwal, faced corruption charges. Under pressure to resign, Kejriwal passed leadership to Atishi in September 2023. She was sworn in as the 8th and youngest chief minister of Delhi on September 21, 2024, making her the third woman to hold this role. Atishi’s declared net worth was Rs 76.93 lakh, and she doesn’t own a car or a house.
