The International Criminal Court (ICC) recently spoke out against the sanctions imposed by former President Donald Trump. These sanctions target the ICC for trying to investigate war crimes, especially involving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The ICC, which works to provide justice for victims of serious crimes worldwide, said Trump’s actions aim to weaken the court’s ability to do its job.
The ICC has over 120 member countries and urges them to support its independence and commitment to justice. In a statement, the court emphasized that it stands by its workers and will keep fighting for victims of violence and injustice around the world.
The sanctions include freezing the assets of ICC workers and their families and banning them from traveling. The US and Israel are not part of the ICC, and both leaders expressed their approval of Trump’s sanctions. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar supported Trump, highlighting that both countries follow international law.
Human rights groups, however, criticized the sanctions. Liz Evenson from Human Rights Watch argued that these actions help people who commit serious crimes rather than those trying to stop them. She compared Trump’s decision to strategies used by countries like Russia that try to block the work of the ICC.
