The Indian defense ministry has just signed two big contracts worth ₹10,147 crore to buy ammunition for the Pinaka rocket system, which is made in India! This decision is part of the government’s plan to make India self-reliant in defense.

Last week, the Cabinet Committee on Security approved this purchase. The contracts were signed with two companies: Economic Explosives Limited from Nagpur and Munitions India Limited from Pune. Economic Explosives is providing special bombs that can target enemies’ tanks and soldiers over a larger area. Munitions India is supplying rockets that can hit targets far inside enemy territory with precision.

These new weapons will improve the Indian Army’s firepower and modernization efforts. The Pinaka rocket system was showcased during the Republic Day parade, along with other military vehicles and weapons.

By buying more weapons and equipment from Indian companies, the government aims to improve the country’s defense capabilities and create jobs in smaller businesses. Munitions India Limited was formed from the old Ordnance Factory Board to make defense production more efficient.

The Indian government plans to reach a defense manufacturing target of ₹1.75 lakh crore by 2024-25. Recently, India has implemented several measures to promote self-reliance in defense. This includes banning imports of certain weapons, setting a separate budget for locally made military supplies, allowing more foreign investment, and streamlining business operations.

In the Union Budget announced on February 1, India allocated more than ₹6.81 lakh crore for defense spending, with ₹1.8 lakh crore focused on modernizing the military. Most of the money will be spent on buying weapons made in India, with an aim of supporting local industries.
