On Tuesday, Donald Trump said he wants to “take over” and “own” Gaza. But many problems stand in the way of this idea. Here are four reasons why Trump’s plan is unlikely to succeed:
1. Love for the Land
Palestinians have a strong connection to their homes and land. After a ceasefire, many people hurried back to their northern homes. One woman, Lamees al-Iwady, said this was the happiest day of her life. Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian envoy to the UN, firmly dismissed Trump’s idea, insisting that “our homeland is our homeland.”
2. Arab Countries Don’t Support It
Arab nations like Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE have rejected Trump’s plan. They believe that the rights of the Palestinian people should not be ignored. Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas sought advice from the King of Jordan, showing concern about the plan. Many people in Arab countries are likely to react negatively, with protests expected.
3. No More Wars
Trump’s proposal includes sending US troops into Gaza. This goes against his promise to avoid getting the US involved in more foreign wars. The US military would face strong resistance from groups like Hamas, which has fought against Israel for over a year. Past American military efforts abroad have not gone well, like in Afghanistan and Iraq.
4. Breaking International Rules
If Trump wants to control Gaza, he needs permission from those in charge there, which he won’t receive. International law makes it clear that people have the right to choose their own future, and countries cannot just take control of other areas. The United Nations also says that forcing people out of occupied territories is illegal.
Israel’s Cautious Reaction
While some Israeli leaders support Trump, many are wary and think the plan might not be practical. Opposition leader Yair Lapid has said that Israel needs to come up with its own plans instead of relying on Trump. This shows that many believe Trump’s idea might be unrealistic.
As a businessman, Trump seems to think that a big idea could solve the ongoing conflict. But everyone knows it’s not that simple
