Today, a US military plane carrying Indian immigrants who were in the country illegally landed in Amritsar, India. This is the first time such a deportation has happened during Donald Trump’s second term as president. The aircraft flew from San Antonio, Texas, to Shri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport in Amritsar, Punjab.

As news spread, images of people in handcuffs began to circulate on social media, suggesting these were the returning Indian immigrants. In some pictures, men were seen with handcuffs and chains around their ankles, and their faces were covered with masks. Many social media users expressed anger and sadness over these images, calling it a shocking sight.

However, a closer look reveals that these photos do not show the Indian immigrants from today’s flight. In fact, they are from a previous deportation where migrants were sent back to Guatemala on January 30. The images of men with their ankles chained together were first shared by the Associated Press and are not related to today’s arrival in Amritsar.

The A.P. report mentioned that the US military is increasingly helping with immigration enforcement, and similar flights carrying deported people have gone to various countries including Guatemala, Ecuador, and Colombia.
