Former U.S. Representative Tulsi Gabbard is one step closer to becoming the next Director of National Intelligence (DNI). She just passed a key Senate committee vote by a narrow margin of 9-8, with all the Republicans voting in favor and all the Democrats against. Tom Cotton, the chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, expressed excitement about her nomination and about working with her to keep the country safe.
This vote came soon after Senator Todd Young, a Republican from Indiana, said he would support Gabbard. He shared his thoughts on social media, noting that Gabbard has talked with him about important issues to help intelligence workers and policymakers get trustworthy information. Young, who has experience as a Marine Corps intelligence officer, emphasized that he believes in a collaborative approach and is confident that Gabbard will help improve national security.
Gabbard, who was nominated by former President Donald Trump, has a background as an Army Reserve lieutenant colonel and previously served as a Democratic congresswoman and presidential candidate. She switched to the Republican Party last year. Interestingly, she has referred to the intelligence community as part of the “deep state” in the past.
Another supportive vote came from Senator Susan Collins, a Republican from Maine. With endorsements from Collins and Young, Gabbard’s path to full Senate confirmation looks positive.
