On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia made it clear that it would not build ties with Israel unless a Palestinian state is created first. This statement came after former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Saudis were not asking for a Palestinian state. Trump also suggested that the U.S. would take control of Gaza after moving the Palestinian people elsewhere and help develop the area.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said the country’s stance is “clear and explicit,” meaning there is no room for misunderstanding. Saudi Arabia strongly opposes any plan to make the Palestinians leave their homes and insists that its support for them is unchangeable.
During the press conference with Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed confidence that Israel could still succeed in forming relations with Saudi Arabia. The U.S. had been trying for months to get Saudi Arabia to accept Israel as a recognized country before the recent fighting began in Gaza, which has made Saudi Arabia rethink its plans due to Arab anger over the conflict.
