On Wednesday, a US military C-17 transport aircraft brought back 104 Indian immigrants from the United States to Amritsar, Punjab. This includes 30 people from Punjab, 33 each from Haryana and Gujarat, along with three from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, and two from Chandigarh. This is the first group deported after President Trump started strict rules against illegal immigration.
The flight left from San Antonio, Texas, and landed around 1:55 PM at the Shri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport in Amritsar. After arriving, the immigrants were questioned, and plans were made to help them get home. Unfortunately, no family members were there to greet them upon arrival.
Authorities checked the immigrants’ documents and health before sending them back to their hometowns. State governments arranged special buses to take these people home, and local police were assigned to ensure their safety.
Many of these deported individuals had come to the US through dangerous routes after paying large amounts of money. The crackdown on immigration by the Trump administration began right after he took office in January. Before this, the US used military planes to deport illegal immigrants to countries like Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras. Sending a plane to India was a longer journey.
Indian officials have said they support the return of citizens who have overstayed their visas or are living in the US without proper papers. The Indian government is against illegal immigration, as it is often linked to organized crime.
