New Delhi: Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took action on Monday by filing a complaint against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. They claimed she used disrespectful language about the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, which they believe hurt the dignity of the country’s highest office. This complaint was sent to Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and also to Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla.
The issue began after Gandhi made comments about President Murmu’s speech during a recent budget session. Reporters asked her about the President’s long speech, and Gandhi replied, “The President was getting very tired by the end…She could hardly speak, poor thing.” Rahul Gandhi, her son, also said the speech was “boring.”
The Rashtrapati Bhavan (the President’s official residence) responded by saying that the President’s efforts to speak for marginalized communities, women, and farmers should be respected.
After Gandhi’s comments, prime minister mod i criticized her for insulting not just the President but also tribal communities, which President Murmu represents.
BJP lawmakers argued that Gandhi’s words were out of line and could harm the reputation of the President’s office. They stressed that parliament members should show respect for each other and for important government positions. They also mentioned that Gandhi’s comments reflected an “elite and anti-tribal mindset.”
BJP members also complained about another lawmaker, Pappu Yadav, who called the President a “rubber stamp.” They demanded that actions be taken against both Gandhi and Yadav, insisting that the President’s office should remain above political battles and that any disrespect towards it is disrespectful to all tribal people in India.
