Bengaluru police have taken away a scooter that had 311 unpaid traffic fines, totaling ₹1.6 lakh (₹160,000). They warned that leaving a vehicle at a police station won’t protect the owner from legal trouble. Authorities stated that if fines are not paid, more serious cases could be filed in court.
The scooter belonged to a travel agent named Periyaswamy, who lives in Kalasipalya. He shared the scooter with his relative Sudeep and another person. The reasons for the fines included riding without a helmet, using a mobile phone while riding, and stopping on pedestrian crossings.
For a long time, the traffic police didn’t take action, even though there were many unpaid fines. The situation changed when a social media user named Shibam posted about it on platform X. He pointed out that Periyaswamy’s fines went up from around ₹1 lakh to ₹1.6 lakh over a year and wondered why the police hadn’t acted sooner.
After seeing the post, the City Market traffic police found Periyaswamy. When they told him how much he owed, he and Sudeep asked for more time to pay, offering to pay a small part. However, the police said no and took the vehicle.
A senior police officer explained that ignoring fines and leaving the vehicle won’t solve the problem. Many people think that if the fines are more than what the vehicle is worth, they can just leave it at the police station. This is not true. Authorities made it clear that if fines are not paid after receiving notices, the police can open a new case for not paying and take it to court. If the person is found guilty, they could face even more legal trouble.
