Trevor Noah’s opening jokes at the Grammy Awards upset many people on social media. Some viewers found his comments about immigration, Colombia, and singer Shakira “not funny” at all. While welcoming celebrities to the event, he joked about the number of illegal immigrants, saying, “Tonight we are celebrating the best music as picked by 13,000 Recording Academy members… and 20 million illegal immigrants.” He added, “This might be the last time I host anything in this country,” hinting at the political climate under Donald Trump.

Noah also made a joke about Shakira, calling her “the best thing out of Colombia that isn’t a Class A felony.” Some people felt this joke was offensive because it brought attention to serious crime issues in Colombia.

Many fans took to social media to express their disappointment. One user wrote, “The Grammys started with an insult to Colombia when Trevor Noah mentioned Shakira.” Another added, “Colombia is known for its talent and culture, not just crime!” More fans were upset and called for an apology, saying they are tired of being seen as criminals.

Despite the mixed reactions, Trevor Noah hosted the Grammys for the fifth time. He became a favorite comedian after taking over from Jon Stewart on The Daily Show and shared that the event would also help with wildfire recovery efforts in Los Angeles
