On Monday, the Supreme Court said it would not hear a petition asking for safety rules for people attending the Maha Kumbh festival. This comes after a tragic stampede that occurred in Prayagraj, where at least 30 people lost their lives and around 60 were hurt.
A bench made up of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar decided not to take the case because they learned from the Uttar Pradesh government that there was already a case filed in the Allahabad High Court regarding the same issue. They suggested that the lawyer, Vishal Tiwari, who filed the petition, should take his concerns to the Allahabad High Court instead.
The Supreme Court called the stampede an unfortunate event and noted that a judicial investigation had already started. The petition was filed right after the stampede on January 30, the day after the incident happened during Mauni Amavasya, a significant day in the Hindu calendar. Tiwari’s petition asked for rules to prevent future stampedes and to protect people’s rights to safety and fairness, as guaranteed by the Constitution.
