The Delhi High Court has sent a notice to Congress leader Shashi Tharoor because of a defamation lawsuit filed by BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Chandrasekhar claims that Tharoor made false and hurtful comments about him during the 2024 General Elections. He wants Tharoor to stop making these statements and to publicly apologize, along with paying ₹10 crore for damaging his reputation.
The court’s judge, Justice Purushainder Kumar Kaurav, has ordered Tharoor to reply to these claims. The notice to Tharoor must be answered by April 28, 2025. Chandrasekhar says that Tharoor’s remarks, which he made on national TV, were meant to harm his reputation and change the election outcome. He believes these false statements were widely shared on news channels and social media, which contributed to his loss in the Lok Sabha elections.
In his lawsuit, Chandrasekhar states that Tharoor made these damaging statements in public in April 2024 and that they severely harmed his personal and professional reputation. Chandrasekhar’s lawyer, Vaibhav Gaggar, along with a team from Karanjawala and Company, is representing him.
On April 10, Chandrasekhar said that Tharoor was spreading wrong information among voters in Thiruvananthapuram, including rumors about bribing important people like parish priests.
