On the last day of campaigning for the Delhi assembly election, Parvesh Verma, the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate for New Delhi, made a promise. He said if his party wins, Talkatora Stadium will be renamed after “Maharishi Valmiki,” a respected figure in Indian history. Verma explained that he will bring this proposal to the first New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) meeting after February 8. He believes the current name, which comes from the Mughal era when the stadium was used as a swimming pool, is outdated.
Verma said that the Valmiki community deserves recognition, so he aims to make this change within a month after the results are declared. He also mentioned that important places like airports and stadiums should bear the names of great leaders or martyrs who contributed to the nation.
Despite the ongoing competition, Verma expressed strong confidence that the BJP will win the election by a margin of over 20,000 votes, predicting that AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal would finish third and lose his deposit.
As the election date approaches, Kejriwal accused the BJP of planning to use the police unfairly and make it hard for voters to get correct information. Manish Sisodia, AAP’s candidate from Jangpura, also criticized the BJP for using threats and misbehavior leading up to the elections.
On the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to students in Delhi and criticized the AAP government for not helping children succeed, saying they only allow students with good marks to continue their education past class nine. Amit Shah, another BJP leader, joined the criticism, suggesting that the AAP government has caused Delhi to fall behind compared to other states with BJP in charge.
The Delhi Assembly elections will take place on February 5, and the results will be announced on February 8.
