US President Donald Trump announced he will apply a 25% tax, called a tariff, on goods from Canada and Mexico starting Saturday. He is also thinking about putting a similar tax on China. Trump said he would decide on Thursday night whether to also include oil in this tariff list.
He explained that he is imposing these tariffs for several reasons: illegal immigration, drug smuggling, and the large amounts of money that the US loses in trade with Canada and Mexico. “We have big deficits with those countries,” he stated.
The president emphasized that these tariffs might increase over time. When asked about oil, he said, “If they treat us properly, we’ll see.” Trump believes the US does not need these countries’ products, claiming, “We have all the oil and lumber we need right here at home.”
He mentioned that the US spends a lot on Canada and Mexico, around $175 billion and $250-300 billion a year, respectively. Trump is also considering action against China for sending fentanyl, a dangerous drug, into the US, which causes many deaths. He said, “China needs to stop sending fentanyl and killing our people,” and warned that they will also be facing tariffs soon.
Fentanyl is a very potent opioid that poses a serious risk in America today.
