The Supreme Court refused to allow the ‘Urs’ festival to happen from February 1 to February 3 at a dargah in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district that has been demolished. Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih listened to Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who represented the Gujarat government. He explained that all illegal buildings, including temples, on the government’s land were torn down. Mehta added that no activities, including Hindu religious events, were allowed on that land anymore because it was previously occupied illegally.
The lawyer for the applicant argued that there used to be a dargah on the site, which was taken down by the authorities. He mentioned that the ‘Urs’ festival had been held there for many years and that permission was denied for this year’s festival. The bench said they could not approve the request without discussing the main issue first. On January 27, the Supreme Court announced it would review the case, including a complaint about the Gujarat authorities allegedly destroying homes and places of worship in Gir Somnath without permission.
