MOSCOW – Russia is upset with U.S. President Donald Trump’s new plan to build a missile defense system. They believe this move could harm the global balance of nuclear weapons and might lead to conflicts in space.

Last Monday, Trump signed an order to develop an “American Iron Dome,” which is a new missile defense system to protect against different types of attacks, including missiles that move really fast. The White House explained that this is to update an old system to keep the country safe from new threats created by rivals.

However, Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, warned that this plan could weaken Russia and China’s ability to defend themselves. This is the strongest criticism from Russia regarding Trump’s policies since he took office. Zakharova said that the U.S. is trying to build up its nuclear power and create a situation where weapons could be placed in space.

She stated, “We view this as the U.S. moving towards military conflict in space.” Zakharova emphasized that rather than helping to reduce tensions, this approach would make talks about nuclear weapons control more difficult.

The White House mentioned that the Iron Dome aims to protect peace and deter attacks by giving the U.S. powerful defense capabilities. Trump and Putin have expressed interest in meeting to discuss important topics like the ongoing war in Ukraine, but Russia claims it hasn’t heard from the U.S. regarding when and where such a meeting might happen.
