If I had to sum up Deva in one word, it would be “underwhelming.” This movie had chances to impress, especially with its fun cop character, but it falls short.
The movie is about Dev, a hot-headed cop in Mumbai. He’s tough and doesn’t scare easily. After he kills a dangerous gangster named Prabhat Jadhav, his friend ACP Rohan D’Silva takes the credit. But during a ceremony, Rohan gets shot. Dev decides to investigate, but later, he loses his memory. What happens next is the rest of the story.
The film starts off with an exciting vibe, but it quickly hits a snag with bad special effects right at the beginning. People hoped to see Shahid Kapoor shine, mixing his roles from Haider and Kabir Singh, and he kind of does! He looks great as a cop and has good swag.
Director Roshan Andrews does a nice job showing Mumbai’s streets instead of the typical tourist spots. This choice adds a real feel to the movie. He even pays tribute to Amitabh Bachchan by including one of his famous films’ murals.
However, as we get closer to the halfway point, things start to drag. The second half of the movie can be confusing with too many twists, and the ending doesn’t hit the mark. Pooja Hegde, who plays Dev’s girlfriend and journalist Diya Sathaye, doesn’t have much to do. The other characters, too, are just okay.
What Deva really needed was more thrilling action and less complicated storytelling. The movie had great potential for a fun and unpredictable character, but it instead gives us a predictable tale with a decent Shahid.
