In the early hours of Wednesday, a large crowd at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj caused panic when a stampede-like situation broke out. Millions of pilgrims had gathered for Mauni Amavasya, a very important day for bathing in the holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati. At 1 AM, the Sangam Ghat was already packed with people hoping to take a holy dip.
Mauni Amavasya, also known as Magh Amavasya, is a special day for Hindus. It is believed that bathing in the Sangam on this day will bring blessings and salvation, and traditionally, many people make offerings for their ancestors. This year, it was expected that up to 100 million devotees would come for the holy dip.
The chaos began when a barrier near the Sangam collapsed, causing people to push against each other. This led to injuries as some pilgrims were caught in the crowd. According to Mahant Ravindra Puri, a spiritual leader, rumors spread early in the morning, which added to people’s fear. Witnesses reported being shoved and trapped. Some recalled how they fell and felt helpless as others around them laughed.
Due to the panic, the leaders known as Akharas decided to postpone their holy dip. Mahant Puri said that they were ready but had to call it off after hearing about the situation. However, once things calmed down, he assured that they would take their holy dip later that day, even if it was a smaller event.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to discuss how to handle the situation. The Chief Minister advised pilgrims to stay away from the crowded Sangam Ghat and instead bathe in nearby areas. He urged everyone to follow official guidance and ignore rumors.
Before the holy dip, the Mela authorities had given instructions for managing the crowds, but the huge turnout made it hard to control. Mauni Amavasya is important as it is thought to help wash away sins and provide blessings. Many devotees usually take five dips facing different directions to receive the best spiritual benefit.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, happening every 12 years, is one of the biggest gatherings in the world. It takes place in four locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain. This year’s event at Prayagraj is expected to draw massive crowds, including more major bathing dates coming up, such as the third Shahi Snan on February 3.
