Dehradun’s District Magistrate has declared a holiday for schools and anganwadis (childcare centers) because Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting the city for the opening of the 38th National Games on Tuesday. This holiday is for January 28, 2025, and is due to safety concerns as part of the Disaster Management Act, 2005. The Chief Education Officer and the District Program Officer are responsible for making sure all schools and anganwadis follow this order.

Prime Minister Modi will first open the Utkarsh Odisha-Make in Odisha Conclave 2025 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, at around 11 AM. After that, he will head to Dehradun to officially start the National Games at about 6 PM.

These Games are extra special because they are being held in Uttarakhand to celebrate 25 years of the state, and competitions will take place in 11 cities across 8 districts from January 28 to February 14. Athletes from 36 states and one union territory will compete in 35 sports. This year, athletes will be competing for medals in 33 sports, while two will be exhibition sports. For the first time, Yoga and Mallakhamb will be included in the National Games!

More than 10,000 athletes are expected to participate in this grand event. To promote sustainability, this year’s theme is “Green Games.” A special area named the Sports Forest will be created near the main venue, where athletes and guests will plant over 10,000 saplings. Additionally, the medals and certificates for the winners will be made from eco-friendly and biodegradable materials.
