Uttarakhand has just become the first state in India to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) that applies to everyone, regardless of their religion. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami explained that this new law will help end unfair practices and give equal rights to all citizens.

Key points of the UCC include:
– Polygamy is banned: People cannot marry someone else while their spouse is alive.
– Equal property rights for daughters: Daughters now have the same rights to inherit family property as sons, no matter what religion they belong to.
– Live-in relationships: Couples living together must register their relationship, and their parents will be informed, but the information will stay secret. Children born from these relationships will have the same property rights as other children.
– Minimum marriage age: The legal age for marriage is now 21 years for boys and 18 years for girls.
– Focus on rights: The UCC aims to stop outdated practices like polygamy and child marriage and supports women’s empowerment.

Chief Minister Dhami also mentioned that January 27 will be celebrated as Uniform Civil Code Day in the state. The UCC is intended to treat everyone equally and protect specific rights for scheduled tribes.

The new law will start on January 27, 2025, for everyone in Uttarakhand, with some exceptions for tribal communities.
