Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni recently became the Mahamandaleshwar (spiritual leader) of the Kinnar Akhara at the Mahakumbh Mela, which has created a lot of discussion. Many spiritual leaders are upset about her new position because of her past actions.

Mamta Kulkarni received her new spiritual name, Shriyamai Mamta Nand Giri, from Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, the head of Kinnar Akhara, during her initiation ceremony. However, some saints doubt her suitability for this important role due to her history, which includes some criminal activities. Shri Swami Anand Swaroop Maharaj, a leader of Shambhavi Peeth, called her elevation a “betrayal of Sanatan Dharma” and warned her about potential dangers, suggesting there shouldn’t be a path of renouncement for women like her.

Other saints, like Mahamandaleshwar Balaknanda Ji Maharaj, have also expressed concern about her title, saying a deep investigation of a person’s character is typically required for such roles. Mahamandaleshwar Ramakrishnanand Giri added that a person must have a good character, knowledge, and the ability to guide others before taking on such a high position.

On the other hand, some individuals in the spiritual community support Mamta Kulkarni. Ravindra Puri, the President of the Parishad, believes that anyone can turn to spirituality at any point in life and that her past should not limit her future growth.

Recently, Mamta Kulkarni started her spiritual journey by giving up her old life and taking on the new name ‘Mai Mamta Nand Giri’ with approval from the Uttar Pradesh government. During her ceremony at the Kinnar Akhara, she took her vows and also participated in a special ritual called ‘Pind Daan.’
