A new Chinese AI company called DeepSeek has quickly become very popular, even beating ChatGPT to be the top free app on Apple’s App Store in the US. This happened just two weeks after DeepSeek launched its app on January 10. The company says its AI Assistant, which uses a model called DeepSeek-V3, is better than many other AI models available.

DeepSeek’s success is an important moment in the global AI competition, showing that China is making strong progress in this field. This raises questions about the effectiveness of US laws that try to limit China’s access to advanced technologies.

Despite the US government’s efforts to block chips made in America from going to China, DeepSeek is doing well, suggesting that China’s advancements in AI might not be as restricted as previously thought. The DeepSeek-V3 model was trained using Nvidia’s H800 chips, costing less than $6 million to develop.

While some experts doubt these claims, the H800 chips are believed to be less powerful than those banned by US laws, raising doubts in the US tech industry about the success of these restrictions. Founded in 2023 in Hangzhou, DeepSeek is the first Chinese company to gain attention in the US by matching or even beating the performance of top American AI models. Despite its fast rise, not much is known about DeepSeek, which now symbolizes China’s growing strength in artificial intelligence.
