In a recent chat with the Wall Street Journal, Bill Gates shared his thoughts on the chances of a new pandemic happening soon. He thinks there’s about a 10 to 15 percent chance of this within the next four years. Gates believes that the world should be more ready now than it was during the COVID-19 outbreak, but sadly, he feels we are not.

He pointed out that many countries are still arguing about what went wrong in the past instead of figuring out how to be better prepared. He said, “I wouldn’t say we’re as far along as you’d expect after spending trillions of dollars and losing millions of lives.”

Gates has been warning about pandemic risks for a long time. Back in 2015, he spoke at a TED Talk about how unprepared we were for a disease outbreak, a prediction that sadly came true with COVID-19. In 2022, he wrote a book called “How to Prevent the Next Pandemic,” sharing ideas to improve health systems worldwide.

Through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Gates has pushed for better readiness. The foundation has put in up to $125 million in the U.S. to help with the end of COVID-19 and prepare for future pandemics.

However, Gates mentioned that there have been slow advancements because of political fights and not enough teamwork globally. He also noted that issues like climate change and bigger populations could make pandemics more likely.

His warnings come at a time when there is confusion about the U.S. pandemic response. Federal health agencies are being told to stop public communications for now. Plus, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a well-known critic of vaccine mandates, has been suggested to lead health efforts.

As we look to the future, Gates is worried that global issues could create new risks, including the threat of a big war. He continues to push for better global cooperation, stronger health plans, and more research to reduce the chances of future pandemics.
