Uttarakhand will become the first state in India to adopt a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on January 27. This law aims to create fairness and equality for all citizens by ensuring everyone has the same rights and responsibilities, regardless of their caste, religion, or gender. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that all preparations for the UCC have been completed, including staff training and approval of the necessary rules.
The UCC was officially approved on March 12, 2024, after receiving support from the president. CM Dhami explained that this initiative is part of a larger effort by the Prime Minister to help India develop into a more organized and self-reliant nation. He added that the code will standardize laws related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, and other personal matters for most citizens, while exempting scheduled tribes.
The ruling BJP party has promised the UCC for many years, and now, just before the recent Lok Sabha elections, Uttarakhand’s government is taking the lead. The state cabinet has approved all rules for implementing the UCC, and the chief minister has committed to starting it this month. On New Year’s Day, Dhami showcased his vision for 2025, celebrating 25 years of statehood for Uttarakhand, and promised the UCC would be a major achievement.
With the UCC, registering marriages and live-in relationships will become mandatory. The government hopes this new law will inspire other BJP-led states to follow suit and make similar changes.
