Donald Trump made a short statement after Kristi Noem was confirmed as the new US Secretary of Homeland Security. He said, “America is back.” The Senate voted on Saturday, and Noem’s nomination passed with 59 votes in favor and 34 against. She takes over from Alejandro Mayorkas, who faced criticism for the migrant crisis during Joe Biden’s presidency.
Noem is now the fourth person confirmed in Trump’s cabinet. Other confirmed members include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who took his oath with all seven of his kids in attendance.
After her confirmation, Noem tweeted, “Thank you, Mr. President, for trusting me to serve as Secretary of Homeland Security. I will work to make America SAFE again!” As Secretary, Noem will manage a huge department responsible for keeping the country safe and controlling immigration.
During her swearing-in, Noem promised to find and stop security threats, provide help during disasters, secure the southern border, and improve the immigration system.
Noem is in charge of agencies that handle citizenship, customs, and disaster response. Some Democratic senators wanted to know if she would help states during emergencies even if Trump told her not to. Noem responded, saying she would follow the law and remain fair.
Noem faces challenges in achieving Trump’s border security goals. Having grown up on a farm and leading South Dakota, she knows that many undocumented workers in the state help with tough jobs that offer housing and food.
