On Sunday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was excited about the U.S. Supreme Court’s choice to send Tahawwur Rana back to India. He is accused of being involved in the terrible 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said this news is a big relief for all Indians, especially those who lost family during the attacks.
Trivedi pointed out that the Modi government’s fierce attitude towards fighting terrorism made this possible. He said, “In 2008, during the Mumbai attacks, many lives were lost. Now, with the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision, bringing Rana back to India is good news for everyone, especially for the families affected.”
Trivedi also criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi, saying some groups linked to them try to protect people accused of terrorism. He mentioned that AAP leader Atishi’s family once asked for mercy for Afzal Guru, who was involved in the 2001 Parliament attack, indicating a troubling pattern.
There was no reply from AAP regarding these claims. Last September, AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal spoke about Atishi’s family connections with mercy petitions for Afzal Guru. AAP’s Chief Whip, Dilip Pandey, responded by saying Maliwal should resign if she feels shame about the accusations.
Tahawwur Rana is connected to David Coleman Headley, a terrorist from Pakistan. The Mumbai attacks, which occurred from November 26 to 29 in 2008, resulted in the deaths of 166 people, including six Americans. This attack involved 10 Pakistani terrorists who attacked famous places in Mumbai.
In May 2023, a U.S. district court approved Rana’s extradition. After he lost in several legal battles, including with the U.S. Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court denied his final appeal on January 21, allowing India to bring him back.
