The US Senate has approved President Donald Trump’s choice of Pete Hegseth as the new Secretary of Defense after a tense late-night vote, according to The Associated Press. Vice President JD Vance made the crucial tie-breaking vote.

Hegseth, a 44-year-old former Fox News host, faced criticism about whether he’s fit for the job. Some senators raised concerns about his heavy drinking and behavior towards women. Three Republicans—Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski, and Susan Collins—joined Democrats in voting against his confirmation. This was surprising because they are usually on the same side as the President.

Even McConnell, who used to lead the Republicans, questioned if Hegseth is ready for such an important role. He explained that managing almost 3 million military and civilian workers, a budget of nearly $1 trillion, and global partnerships is very challenging. McConnell said Hegseth has not yet shown he can handle this big responsibility.
