Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump had a friendly phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He believes they can reach a trade deal. This chat covered important topics like the popular app TikTok, trade issues, and Taiwan.

Since becoming president, Trump has talked about putting a 10% tax on imports from China because he claims that drugs, especially fentanyl, come from China to the U.S. through Mexico and Canada. However, he hasn’t put these taxes into action yet, even though he promised to do so during his campaign. Trump has also mentioned the possibility of taxes against Europe, Mexico, and Canada.

In a recent interview with Fox News, Trump said, “It went fine. It was a good, friendly conversation,” when asked about his call with Xi. He believes he can make a fair trade deal with China. Trump prefers not to use taxes, saying they are a powerful tool against China. But he also said, “They don’t want them, and I’d rather not have to use them, but it’s a tremendous power over China.”

The U.S. and China have many problems, including disagreements about technology and military strength, trade fights, and concerns about TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.
