On January 23, 2025, hundreds of same-sex couples celebrated their love in Thailand, making the country the first in Southeast Asia to allow same-sex marriage. This big change came after a long fight by the LGBTQ community, who spent over ten years advocating for equal marriage rights.
Over 200 couples registered to marry at the Siam Paragon shopping center in Bangkok. With this new law, same-sex couples can now legally register their marriages and enjoy the same rights as heterosexual couples, including rights related to finances, medical decisions, adoption, and inheritance.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra shared a special message during a mass wedding event. She called this law a historic moment for equality and inclusivity, showcasing the society’s greater understanding of gender diversity and ensuring that everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, race, or religion, has equal rights and dignity.
The new marriage law was officially written and recognized on September 24, 2024, after receiving the support of Thailand’s king. This day will always be remembered as a time when love won, as the rainbow flag flew proudly over the country.
