In a sad turn of events, nearly 4,200 baby chicks have died at a poultry farm in the Dhalegaon village of Latur district, Maharashtra. This happened just days after around 60 crows were found dead from bird flu nearby.

The chicks, only five to six days old, began dying over the course of two to three days. The farm owner did not inform the authorities promptly, which allowed the disease to spread and harm most of his flock of 4,500 chicks.

Dr. Shridhar Shinde, the Deputy Commissioner for Animal Husbandry, and his team have been investigating the situation. They have sent samples of the dead birds to a special lab in Pune for testing.

Dr. Shivaji Kshirsagar from the Ahmedpur veterinary hospital is urging all poultry farm owners to register their farms and report any unusual deaths quickly to help stop the spread of disease. Earlier this month, the deaths of the crows were confirmed to be caused by bird flu based on tests from two labs, one in Pune and one in Bhopal.
