On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump told reporters that he is thinking about putting a 10% tax on goods from China starting February 1. He said this is because China is sending fentanyl, a dangerous drug, to Mexico and Canada. Trump, speaking at a news conference with tech leaders like Oracle’s Larry Ellison and OpenAI’s Sam Altman, mentioned that the tax could also be around 25% for Mexico and China combined.

When asked about his recent talk with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump said they didn’t discuss tariffs too much. He also mentioned that he encouraged Xi to help stop the conflict in Ukraine, saying China has not done much to help with that.

Trump recalled that he had a deal with Xi to give the death penalty to people who sell fentanyl and send it to the US, but he feels that President Biden didn’t follow up on it. He stated that if there were strict punishments like the death penalty, there wouldn’t be as much fentanyl coming to Mexico, Canada, and other places.
