On Wednesday, the Taliban in Afghanistan made a surprising claim. They accused some people in Pakistan of hiding militants in two areas: Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. The Taliban said these militants are trying to plan attacks in different countries in the region. This accusation came after a meeting of the Taliban’s special security group, which is led by their deputy defense minister.
Relations between Afghanistan’s Taliban and the government of Pakistan have worsened recently. Pakistan even conducted airstrikes in Afghanistan last month, claiming they were targeting the Pakistani Taliban. However, the Taliban reported that many civilians were killed in these strikes.
In their report, the Taliban mentioned that many militant leaders escaped to neighboring countries after losing their influence in Afghanistan. They claim these groups are regrouping in Pakistan with help from some people, using Balochistan and parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa as hiding spots. The report said special training camps have been set up, and these militants are getting help with fundraising and recruiting new members.
The Taliban warned that these militants may try to use their bases in Pakistan to carry out attacks both in the region and elsewhere, although they did not provide specific details. Past reports have indicated that many fighters from Pakistan-based groups, like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, are still active in Afghanistan.
Despite these challenges, the Taliban said they have been successful in stopping most attacks planned against Afghanistan, especially those involving foreign nationals from countries like Tajikistan and Pakistan. They also emphasized that they are dedicated to not interfering in other countries’ affairs and keeping Afghanistan safe.
Recently, during a meeting in Dubai, the Taliban informed India that they understand India’s security concerns, marking the highest level of communication between New Delhi and Kabul since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021.
