Sanjoy Roy’s mother is heartbroken after her son was sentenced to life in prison for raping and killing a doctor from R.G. Kar Hospital. The 75-year-old woman, Malati, stayed inside her home, shutting the door on reporters who were asking for her comments. Earlier, when reporters gathered outside her small house, she expressed her feelings, saying she was ashamed and wished to be left alone.
Before the verdict, Malati had expressed sympathy for the family of the doctor. She said that as a mother of three daughters herself, she understood their pain and would accept any punishment the court decided for Sanjoy. She mentioned, “If the court decides to hang him, I won’t object because his guilt is clear.”
After the court announced that Sanjoy would spend life in prison, Malati became very upset and told reporters, “I don’t want to talk about it. I am ashamed of everything. Please go away.” She then locked herself inside her home.
Sanjoy’s family was not present in court during the sentencing. His elder sister mentioned that there were rumors about other people being involved in the crime, and she felt it should be investigated.
Neighbors expressed disbelief about Sanjoy’s actions, noting how he changed after joining a boxing class and started drinking alcohol. One neighbor, Urmila Mahato, said that although she had known him growing up, she never thought he could commit such a terrible crime.
On Monday, a court in Kolkata found Sanjoy Roy guilty of raping and murdering a doctor who was working at the hospital last year. The judge, Anirban Das, sentenced him to life imprisonment, sparking strong reactions and protests across West Bengal.
