Billionaire Elon Musk has joined the big debate about whether TikTok should be banned in the U.S. He shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), focusing on how U.S. and Chinese social media access is very different. While TikTok is free to be used in America, American apps like X, Facebook, and Google face strict rules in China.
Musk said, “I have been against a TikTok ban for a long time because it goes against freedom of speech. But it’s not fair that TikTok can work in the U.S. while X can’t work in China. We need to change this.”
TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, is very popular in the U.S. But many people worry about data security and possible connections to the Chinese government.
Back in 2020, former President Trump tried to make TikTok hand over its U.S. business to American companies because of these concerns. This plan didn’t work out, but the current President, Biden, is also considering stricter rules or even a ban on TikTok.
In May 2023, Montana became the first state to ban TikTok, leading the way for other states to think about similar laws. Supporters believe TikTok could risk the privacy of over 170 million American users, worrying that their data might be misused.
