New Delhi: Assam’s Police Chief Gyanendra Pratap Singh is now the new Director General (DG) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The announcement came from the government on Saturday. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved this decision by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Singh, who started his career as an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer in 1991, will lead the CRPF until he retires on January 31, 2027, or until further notice.

Before this role, Singh worked with the Special Protection Group (SPG) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA), taking on various important positions. Last month, after the previous DG, Anish Dayal Singh, retired, the Ministry of Home Affairs asked 1993-batch IPS officer Vitul Kumar to take over temporarily.

The CRPF is India’s largest paramilitary force, with nearly 300,000 members. They are involved in fighting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, tackling insurgencies in the northeast, and addressing anti-Maoist operations in states affected by left-wing extremism. The upcoming year is crucial for the CRPF as they work to end left-wing extremism in Chhattisgarh by March 2026, a target set by the government. There are over 40,000 CRPF officers working in Chhattisgarh alone.
