A court in Pakistan has found former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, guilty of corruption. They were sentenced to 14 years and 7 years in prison, respectively. Judge Nasir Javed Rana announced the decision in a temporary courtroom set up in Adiala Jail.

The case, known as the al-Qadir Trust case, involves claims that Khan, Bibi, and six others caused a loss of 190 million pounds (about 50 billion Pakistani Rupees) to the government. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed the charges against them in December 2023.

The case centers around money returned to Pakistan by the UK’s National Crime Agency. This money was supposed to go to the national treasury, but it is alleged that it was misused for personal gain by a businessman who helped Khan and Bibi set up a university. Bushra Bibi, who is a trustee of the Al-Qadir Trust, is accused of benefiting from this money and using it to buy a large piece of land (458 kanals) for the university in Jhelum.
