On Thursday, former Army chief VK Singh became the new governor of Mizoram. He is the 25th person to hold this position since Mizoram became a state in 1987. VK Singh, who used to be a Union minister, took over from Hari Babu Kambhampati, who is now the governor of Odisha.
The oath of office ceremony took place at the Raj Bhavan in Aizawl, where the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, Vijay Bishnoi, swore him in. Many important people attended, including Chief Minister Lalduhoma, other government officials, and former Chief Ministers like Lal Thanhawla and Zoramthanga. Church leaders and members of different groups were also there to support the occasion.
President Droupadi Murmu appointed Singh as governor on December 24. The ceremony was supposed to happen on January 9, but it was postponed to January 16 because of a health issue in Singh’s family.
Born in 1951, Singh was the Chief of Army Staff from 2010 to 2012. After leaving the military, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2014 and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, in that year’s general elections. He won again in 2019. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first term, Singh held several important roles, including Minister of State for External Affairs and Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER). In Modi’s second term, he was the Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, as well as Civil Aviation.
