On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden announced that his idea for an economic corridor connecting India, the Middle East, and Europe is now more achievable after the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. This vision was first shared during the G-20 summit in Delhi in September 2023. Biden expressed optimism that the corridor could soon become a reality, thanks in part to the deal that had both a ceasefire and the return of hostages.
While discussing the ceasefire, Biden noted that although his team played a vital role in negotiating the deal, the next administration, likely led by President-elect Donald Trump, will be responsible for making it work. He stated, “This deal was made under my administration, but the next team will carry it out.” He praised the hard work of American diplomats, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
Biden also identified new chances for peace in the Middle East. He highlighted the potential for a brighter future, free from the influence of groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Assad’s regime in Syria. He hopes that there will be a credible path for Palestinians to have their own state and for Israel to improve relations with its Arab neighbors, including Saudi Arabia.
However, Biden acknowledged the risks that still exist, including threats from ISIS and Iran. He said, “As I prepare to leave office, our friends are strong, our enemies are weak, and we leave behind a real chance for a better future in the Middle East.”
As part of the deal, Hamas is expected to release 33 Israeli hostages taken during the attacks on October 7, 2023, while Israel will free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in return. Since those attacks, Israeli military actions in Gaza have resulted in significant loss of life, with over 46,707 Palestinians reported killed.
