A Republican Congress member, Rep. Lance Gooden, is urging the US Department of Justice (DOJ) to keep all documents related to the investigations of Gautam Adani, a billionaire from India. Rep. Gooden sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland expressing his worries just before Donald Trump begins his new administration.

Gooden thinks that the DOJ’s indictment of the Adani Group focuses on actions that happened in India and involved Indian citizens, which he believes doesn’t harm American interests. He pointed out that the accusations, even if true, wouldn’t justify US involvement because no American was affected. He compared this to another case involving Smartmatic, a US company, where American executives were involved in illegal activities abroad, yet no actions were taken against them.

In his letter, Gooden posed several important questions to Garland. He asked why no Americans were indicted if US interests were involved, how the DOJ plans to handle extradition requests if India objects, and if this case could harm US-India relations, considering India is a valuable partner for the US.

Gooden cautioned that pursuing this case could create a negative image of India, an important country in the Asia-Pacific region. He suggested that the best approach would be to let Indian authorities handle the investigation instead of jumping to conclusions and risking the relationship between the US and India.

He argued that targeting companies like Adani, which have invested heavily in the US and created thousands of jobs, could hurt the American economy. Gooden expressed concern that these actions could discourage future investments and negatively impact efforts to boost the US economy.

Lastly, he urged the DOJ to focus on issues that directly threaten Americans, rather than getting involved in foreign matters that may be politically motivated. He also requested information about any communication between the DOJ and entities linked to George Soros regarding the Adani case.
