On Wednesday, two important parties in the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (known as INDIA) showed their support for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the upcoming elections in Delhi. They believe AAP is better positioned to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) than the Congress party.
Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, said his party decided to support AAP because it is strong. He mentioned that their main goal is to make sure the BJP loses. Both Congress and AAP want the same thing too.
In West Bengal, Abhishek Banerjee from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) agreed and said that the INDIA alliance was formed to support strong regional parties. Since AAP won 67 out of 70 seats in Delhi, the TMC backs them. “In every place, we will support the party that is strongest,” he explained.
The chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, expressed some confusion about the INDIA alliance. He emphasized that if the alliance was only for parliamentary elections, it may be best to dissolve it. Abdullah suggested that AAP, Congress, and other parties need to figure out the best way to compete against the BJP together in Delhi after the elections. If the alliance is just for the Lok Sabha elections, they might as well go back to working on their own.
Despite being in the same alliance, AAP and Congress have had arguments recently. They are both running in the February 5 Delhi assembly polls but are not working together. The AAP accused Congress of trying to help BJP defeat them by working with them, while Congress criticized both AAP and BJP for mismanagement.
Recently, other parties in the alliance supported West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to lead them amid discussions about making changes to the coalition. The INDIA alliance formed last year to challenge the BJP, which for the first time since 2014 didn’t get enough seats to rule alone.
INDIA Alliance Supports AAP in Delhi Elections Against BJP
The INDIA alliance leaders back AAP in Delhi elections, calling it stronger than Congress against BJP. Tensions rise as AAP accuses Congress of sabotage.
