India recently faced a tough loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), losing 1-3 to Australia. This defeat has led to a lot of thinking and discussions within Indian cricket, both in the game and behind the scenes. One of the biggest surprises was Ravichandran Ashwin’s sudden retirement during the series, which shocked fans and cricket experts alike.
Ashwin, who is seen as one of India’s best cricketers, decided to retire from international cricket after the third Test match. At 38 years old, his announcement sparked rumors about possible issues within the team and disagreements with the management. However, Ashwin explained that his choice was personal and not influenced by others.
On his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, “I think a lot about life and what to do next. When you feel your job is done, there’s really nothing more to think about. People talked a lot about it, but I don’t think it’s a big deal.”
He discussed his experience in the series, mentioning that he didn’t play the first Test, played the second, but missed the third. He considered playing again, but ultimately felt his “creativity” in cricket was finished.
Because of this, many fans wondered if he should have had a special farewell game. But Ashwin made it clear that he didn’t want a big goodbye. He said, “What difference does it make if people clap for me when I come on the field? After a week, no one will remember it anyway.”
Despite his retiring, Ashwin expressed a desire to continue playing cricket elsewhere, stating, “It’s better to leave people asking ‘why’ instead of ‘why not.’” He finished his career as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, with 537 wickets in 106 matches, and 765 wickets across all formats of the game, a record that puts him in the same league as cricket legend Anil Kumble.
