A report by special counsel Jack Smith says that if Donald Trump hadn’t been elected President again, he might have faced a conviction for trying to change the results of the 2020 election. The U.S. Department of Justice believes that once someone becomes President, they cannot be charged with crimes related to their time in office, no matter how serious the charges are.
The report says, “If it weren’t for Trump’s election, we think there was enough evidence to prove he did something wrong.” Trump was accused of trying to cheat the U.S. and stopping Congress from doing its duty to officially recognize Joe Biden’s election win. This situation got serious when a violent mob, supporting Trump, attacked the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Jack Smith, who was in charge of the investigation, decided not to charge Trump after he won the election. After the report came out, Trump responded on his Truth Social platform, calling Smith “deranged” and saying he couldn’t prove anything against a political opponent.
Another judge, Aileen Cannon, who was chosen by Trump, dismissed a different case against him about secret government documents. However, there are still charges pending against two of his former associates. Smith recently left the justice department after completing his report.
