Daniil Medvedev’s first match at the Australian Open 2025 didn’t go as easily as he thought it would. He faced Kasidit Samrej from Thailand, who is ranked 418 in the world and came in as a wildcard player. At one point, Medvedev was losing two sets to one! But the Russian superstar dug deep and fought back, finally winning the match 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

During the match, Medvedev got really frustrated. He hit his racquet against the net a few times, which actually broke the camera nearby. After the match, he joked about it in his interview, saying he hopes the fine for his actions isn’t too high. “The camera looked tough because my racquet broke, but the camera didn’t. No pieces came out from it!” he said.

The incident happened while Samrej played a great shot in the third set, making it seem like he might win. But Medvedev’s experience showed as he sped through the last two sets when Samrej began to tire out.

Medvedev has been to the finals of the Australian Open three times in the last four years but still hasn’t won the trophy. He once led Rafael Nadal and Jannik Sinner by two sets but couldn’t finish them off. Now, Medvedev hopes to recover well from his long match as he prepares to face a talented young American player, Learner Tien, in the next round.
