Tragedy has struck Los Angeles as wildfires rage on, claiming at least 24 lives. Firefighters are working hard to control the flames, but high winds from the Santa Ana winds are making it much tougher. They are expected to return, causing even more danger to neighborhoods already scorched by fire.
So far, 40,588 acres of land have been burned, and over 12,000 homes have been destroyed. The winds can blow at speeds between 45 to 70 miles per hour and are predicted to keep blowing until Wednesday. However, meteorologists believe conditions might improve later in the week.
The National Weather Service has raised a “Particularly Dangerous Situation” alert to warn people in Southern California of the severe wildfire risk coming this Tuesday.
President-elect Donald Trump plans to visit Los Angeles next week to see the damage firsthand and determine what help is needed.
The Palisades Fire has burned over 23,000 acres, with only 14% contained, while the Eaton Fire has blackened over 14,000 acres and is 33% under control. The Hurst Fire has mostly been contained, covering about 800 acres.
President Joe Biden has expressed condolences and announced help for California, but he stressed that Congress needs to provide more funding, as recovery will take a lot of money.
In a concerning incident last week, a drone crashed into a firefighting plane, but it’s been repaired and will be back in action soon. The FBI is seeking to find out who operated that drone since it was flying illegally.
Many celebrities are stepping up to help those affected by the wildfires. Heavy metal band Metallica donated $500,000, and Beyoncé contributed $2.5 million to aid in relief efforts. Netflix and Comcast NBCUniversal together offered $20 million to support wildfire victims.
CAL Fire director Joe Tyler said over 15,000 first responders are working along with teams from other states, Canada, and Mexico to help in this tough battle against the fires.
