Former Denmark soccer captain Simon Kjaer announced his retirement from professional soccer on Monday. Even though he received some offers to keep playing since he left AC Milan last year, Kjaer decided it was time to say goodbye.
Kjaer will be remembered for his brave actions during a European Championship game in June 2021 when his teammate, Christian Eriksen, collapsed after a heart attack. Kjaer rushed to help Eriksen and protected him from view while his teammates supported him. This heroic act earned Kjaer, Eriksen, and the whole Denmark team a FIFA Fair Play Award later that year.
Kjaer started his soccer career with the Danish club Midtjylland and went on to play in many countries, including Italy, Spain, Germany, France, and Turkey. In 2022, he celebrated winning a Serie A title with AC Milan. Even at 35 years old, Kjaer said that while he had the chance to join some Champions League clubs, he never received a special offer that made him want to play again.
