Jack Smith, the special lawyer in charge of looking into Donald Trump’s efforts to change the 2020 election results, has officially left the U.S. Department of Justice. On January 7, 2025, he completed his investigation and shared his final report with U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. A few days later, on January 10, Smith separated from the Department.

In a recent court document, prosecutors told Judge Aileen Cannon that Smith’s final report is currently on hold. They are asking her not to extend the hold any longer. This report looks into two major issues: Trump’s involvement in the January 6, 2020 attack on the U.S. Capitol and his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House.

As the hold on the report is about to end, Judge Cannon is deciding whether to keep it blocked. This comes just before Trump’s inauguration as the 47th president on January 20. Trump reacted to this news on his Truth Social platform, suggesting that Smith has been “fired” and calling him a disgrace. He claimed that after spending a huge amount of money, Smith left without any results.

Smith previously accused Trump of trying to trick the U.S. government and disrupt the official process of certifying Biden’s win. However, after Trump won the presidential election in November, Smith dropped the charges against him. The Justice Department plans to share the findings from Smith’s report publicly soon. Officials argue that Judge Cannon does not have the authority to keep the report from being released.
